Wilful Ignorance?
Holy Trinity: Gospel, John 8:48-59
John 8:48-59
I am always amazed when I hear people in person, online, or television make the claim that Jesus never said he was God. Oh brother! Our gospel reading for Holy Trinity Sunday is just one of many places where Jesus makes his self-awareness of his own identity crystal clear. What Jesus’ critics and the Bible’s critics are saying is Jesus never came out with the statement, “I am God.” So? That in itself means nothing and only speaks to a true ignorance of the text of Scripture. And for many it is willful as the title today suggests.
I am also amazed how such a monumental subject garners so little real attention from its detractors. Just a general reading of the Bible reveals the nature of the Bible’s God, the nature of the theology bequeathed to His people, Old and New Testament, and even the kind of things that ought to catch our attention when Jesus opens His mouth. Critics would, I guess, rather show their shallow approach and lack of true appreciation of such a truly marvelous and weighty matter. The loss is theirs. The eternal loss is theirs. I truly pray for repentance and faith to be granted to them. Hell, after all, we be a most horrible location to discover that you really should have given the issue a bit more attention.
By the way, blessed reading to you in this week’s gospel. Beware! Jesus claims to be God.
