Why Do We Ever Say No?

Twenty-Second Sunday after Pentecost: Epistle, Hebrews 4:1-13

Hebrews 4:1-13

The writer to the Hebrews is challenging his readers/hearers on all fronts as they make (hopefully) earnest investigation of his claims about Jesus. Just a few verses into our reading he uses the example of those in the wilderness who saw the goodness of the Lord manifested before them again and again. This “gospel” they received was not mixed with faith. Another way of saying that is that they simply said “no” to God’s good promises and provisions. The writer of Hebrews warns his reader/hearers and us by extension to avoid that calamitous response.

Read and ponder this passage and then perhaps entertain the question that titles this meditation. God’s peace and guidance to you as you do so.
