Where I Go

Sixth Sunday after Pentecost: Psalm, Psalm 27:1-14

Psalm 27:1-14

The Psalm for the week allows an expansion of the reading to include the first six verses where we might begin at verse seven. Difficult circumstances necessitate looking for answers. And of course for the Christian, the first-grade answer for any question of dilemma is “Jesus.” One might quibble or even chuckle but going to Jesus during any time we are breathing is a good idea.

Of late, choppy waters have lapped at the door of our home. And not to be overly personal, but “light” from the Bible, the subject of light, has anchored me a bit. So I don’t belabor the point, let’s look at the first verse of our Psalm for the week: “The LORD is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? The LORD is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?”

God is my light. It sounds so simple. And it is. So often, I find myself tripping on the idea that something must be complex to be effective. That is a function and evidence of our pride. “I am a complex being. Therefore, anything that pretends to be of import to me must also be complex.” There’s a technical theological term for that sentiment: HOGWASH!

God is simple in essence. He is One. God’s salvation comes through One (and only One). And God is light. Simple isn’t it? He gives light to my steps, my heart, and all my future. “The LORD is my light and my salvation.” It’s a truth I cannot escape. It draws me. It is where I go.
