What Are You Wearing?
Third Sunday in Advent: Old Testament, Isaiah 61:1-4, 8-11
Isaiah 61:1-4, 8-11
Gloves, mittens, ugly sweaters. All of these and more give indications of the season, at least in Northern districts. The prophet Isaiah writes about wardrobe but not quite in the same sense. I guess it could be seasonal since the prophet is associated often with the Advent season and this reading is from that time of year. Isaiah rejoices with all of the Lord’s people that the “suit of clothes” we’ve been given comes with greater gifts than we could ever imagine. Here’s how the prophet sets it forward:
“I will greatly rejoice in the Lord; my soul shall exult in my God, for he has clothed me with the garments of salvation; he has covered me with the robe of righteousness” (Is. 61:10a).
The prophet continues and lets us know these are akin to wedding garments. And gender is not the issue. Whether bride groom or bride in our example, the fashion Designer is one and the same. Fit is flattering. Textures, colors, and style. All are gifts putting the greater gift on display. These are the garments of salvation. And they point to a standing, a status, a relationship.
Once rebellious, once moving in opposition to the Designer, these are now reconciled to him and adopted by him. And the most careful reading of the Bible, they are wed to him. There’s more to it. The designer has chosen his companion, his spouse. No wonder there is rejoicing. And while we walk together through the wonderful season of Advent, these garments are to be worn all the year through. Garments of salvation. Robes of righteousness.
Wear them well. Amen!
