We Have A King

John 18:33-37

Again this week we are given two readings for the gospel from which to choose. The alternate reading from the gospel through John captures my attention. It has to do with the confrontation of two kingdoms. I hate to use the term “opposing” to describe the two, because in reality there is only one Kingdom and it is the discussion before us in the text that makes that clear.

Jesus is conversing with Pilate, the Roman governor. He is a “king” of sorts under the real ruler of his realm, Caesar in Rome. But have you noticed that whenever anyone in authority in this world is challenged, the claws come out and the poison comes from just under the tongue. Pilate wants to know why the supporters of this unschooled day-laborer are referring to Him as a king. It’s beyond him. But something in their proclamation is getting under his skin.

So now the question arises: does it get under yours and mine? You see, in America, we have no king. And until recent years, our Constitution, which is the highest authority in the land, has kept our government in check. But Americans have no king and we bow to no one. Unless you happen to be a disciple of Jesus. Then you most assuredly have a King and bowing should be... should be our normal posture. But there’s the rub. Bowing to Jesus is difficult for us, perhaps not in the same way it was difficult for Pilate. But it will benefit us to listen to Jesus here: “You say that I am a king. For this purpose I have come into the world---to bear witness to the truth. Everyone who is of the truth listens to my voice” (John 18:37). Jesus is declaring here His Kingship. In no uncertain terms. Pilate has queried and Jesus has answered. And it is significant that Jesus ties His declaration to the concept of truth-telling.

We have no option but to bow for we have no King but Jesus. Read the gospel for the week and remember that just as Pilate struggled with the conflict of kingdoms, so usually do we. We have one voice to obey. It is the voice of our King. And He always speaks the truth.
