Trinity Sunday: Second Reading, Acts 2:14a, 22-36

Acts 2:14a, 22-36

Fitting for Trinity Sunday that perhaps the second Person of the Trinity is mentioned in our reading by the tag, “This Jesus” three times. You could see Peter’s sermon here as perhaps bookended by “This Jesus” with one in the middle. And that would be fine. But there is absolutely no doubt about whom Peter is speaking. Jesus at the front, the back and the center. I wouldn’t expect anything less from the dear apostle.

The first mention (v. 23) is in the context of crucifixion as Peter declares to his hearers that they are indeed responsible for putting to death God’s “sent One.” Next, in verse 32, we have “This Jesus” named in reference to, not death, but the defeating of it. God be praised!

The final time we encounter our subject is in the confirmation and declaration by God Father that this crucified and risen One, “This Jesus” is indeed Lord and Christ, Son of God and God the Son (v. 36). Jesus the crucified One. Jesus the risen One. Jesus, the One. It’s all there in full scope and we need to encounter and know Him well at each of these “stops” in the story.

This Jesus. He’s all we need.
