The One Who Knows

Second Sunday in Lent: Gospel, John 3:1-17

John 3:1-17

Nicodemus, “the teacher of Israel,” is so named by the One who created him. Nicodemus shows great wisdom, mixed with a bit of fear and intimidation as he seeks Jesus for what he does not understand. And taking the religious climate into account, Nicodemus seeks Jesus under the cover of night. Understood.

Jesus makes one thing clear to this seeker of truth. God knows what’s what. Mankind does not. And people still miss this: that we are so conceived carrying the death-dealer called sin that we cannot even see the remedy. Even when He is seated right in front of us.

The much-loved “John 3:16” is part of our gospel reading this week. But don’t overlook the grand conclusion of Jesus’ conversation with the great teacher of Israel. “For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him” (John 3:17). The answer to all of Nicodemus’ questions is a full answer. The remedy to all Nicodemus’ ills (and ours, too, for that matter), is a full remedy. His name is Jesus.

Don’t let the darkness around you keep you from seeing Him.
