The Mouths of Babes

Holy Trinity: Psalm 8

Psalm 8

Several years ago a young Christian singer by the name of Amy Grant captured the evangelical world with an upbeat, rhythmic song which included the opening refrain of Psalm 8: “Oh LORD, our Lord how majestic is your name in all the earth.” While her career grew and that song may have slipped from people’s minds, the message hasn’t. And that’s simply because her message was a biblical one. It’s in the following paragraph of the psalm that I find the center for this meditation: “Out of the mouths of babes and nursing infants You have ordained strength” (8:2a).

Here’s my take. After that magnificent declaration that opens the Psalm, King David is quick to remind us that the little ones who coo and sing, who drool and foster their first attempts at prayer, are the very ones who capture the Lord’s heart and provide for a watching world an indestructible wall of faith in the living God. Funny David doesn’t reference himself as a king, or his mighty men or the nation of Israel, but the mouths of babes as the agent of keeping the enemy of souls at bay. And the great David’s greater Son would someday echo the thought by simply saying, “Let the little children come to me, and do not forbid them; for of such is the kingdom of heaven” (Matthew 19:14).

There’s something powerful about the prayer and praises of children. We could all take a lesson.
