The Great Apostle of Love

All Saints’ Day: Second Reading, 1 John 3:1-3

1 John 3:1-3

Such a beautiful passage. It must not be lifted out of its larger context as we sometimes want to do as readers. The appearance of Jesus for His people at the consummation of this age was large in the heart of the great apostle of love. Think of the Revelation given through John’s pen that closes our Bibles. Jesus, in full glory, before His dear friend. In many ways our reading this week simply informs us that as John saw His friend glorified, so we will be one day soon. I don’t know how much more can actually be said. Perhaps the fewer the words here, the better. This promise, like all those in Holy Scripture, is certain. And so we watch and wait.

“We shall be like Him, for we shall see Him as He is” (1 John 3:3b).
