The Big Why
Twenty-Sixth Sunday after Pentecost: Epistle, Hebrews 10:11-25
Hebrews 10:11-25
Just last week we entertained the biblical truth that our Savior Jesus Christ died once for our sins. It is a sacrifice that needs no repetition and needs nothing added (see Colossians). But here in our reading this week we have a definitive explanation for the solitary nature of that blessed sacrifice on Calvary.
“Now where there is remission of these, there is no longer an offering for sin.”
Hebrews 10:18
The epistle’s author or sermon’s preacher, as Hebrews may well be, has just quoted dear Jeremiah in his New Covenant promises that all the world’s sins would be dealt with: “Their sins and lawless deeds I will remember no more” (Jeremiah 31:34). In the one sacrifice of Jesus those sins indeed were put away. Forever. And our verse quoted above gives the simple reason why there need be no more put towards that dark account. Our sins have been paid for once for all. You and I can rejoice in that truth. And I mean rejoice! The world is waiting to hear it still with all that has been spoken and written on this great truth. Perhaps you and I will be used this week to speak this marvelous truth to someone in need. Come, Holy Spirit!
