Talking to a Friend

The Transfiguration of our Lord: Old Testament, Exodus 34:29-35

Exodus 34:29-35

“Whatcha doing?” “Oh, just talking to a friend.” Most of us have had someone come to us as we perhaps were speaking on the phone and their inquiry is similar to what is written above. The Transfiguration, that outbreak of the divine glory of Jesus on the holy mountain is much more than just talking to a friend. But our Old Testament text this week prepares us for just this type of event. Moses has been speaking with our Lord and as he descends from his “holy mountain” experience there was a type of “physical residue.” His face shone like the sun and the people at the mountain’s base could not bear the glory.

Have you spoken with your glorious Lord, your “Friend,” today? This text frightens me a bit. Not because I fear God’s anger or that I even doubt that He wants to hear from me. It’s just that I forget in the mud and dust of this world that our Lord is indeed glorious. Full of might, of power, of tender mercies and of course, love. And all of that and infinitely more is for me, for you.

Our faces may not shine after our times of fellowship, but I can assure you that our hearts and minds do. The door has been opened. Go in. Go ahead. He’s waiting for you, for me. As dear old Dr. Mitchell used to say, “He yearns for your fellowship.” Go talk to your Friend.
