Staying Put
Reformation: Gospel, John 8:31-36
John 8:31-36
“So Jesus said to the Jews who had believed in him, ‘If you abide in my word, you are truly my disciples, and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free’” (John 8:31-32). Jesus points us to two magnificent things here. His Word and Himself. The highlighting of His Word is clear. The pointing to the truth becomes clear as we look at a later conversation with His disciples where Jesus refers to Himself as “the truth.”
You see, Jesus is not pointing to some nebulous idea of truth be it philosophical or religious or political. And Jesus is certainly not pointing to some 21st century corruption such as “my truth.” No, indeed. Jesus is pointing here to Himself. It’s that clear. Truly.
Stay put in His Word. Stay put within earshot of Jesus because you never allow yourself to be taken from sitting at His feet. He has set us free. Amen.
