Seek Him

Sixth Sunday after Pentecost: Gospel, Mark 5:21-43

Mark 5:21-43

I’m not writing this morning from a good mindset. The gospel reading helps a little, but is really a picture of the challenge I am walking through. You see, I know in my heart of hearts that Jesus, the Lord IS the answer to every dilemma. And that is not to say that our dilemmas are some phantom-like appearance in our lives to be whisked away by some prayer or incantation of the name of Jesus. Life is ugly. There are ugly places in my life just like yours and today I am feeling one especially and the conflict comes precisely because I do not perceive Jesus where I want Him to be. The ground under my feet should be steady. The winds calm and the waves a thing of the past. At least, I’d like to read my Bible that way. There’s only one big issue with that approach: the Bible is NOT about me. Sure, it has to do with me because I am a recipient of its truths and of the fruit of its focus: Jesus. In our account today, Jesus the healer.

I heard a dear old saintly seminary professor once say: “Don’t seek divine healing. Seek the One who heals. Don’t simply seek forgiveness, seek the One who forgives. Don’t dwell on the Second Coming, but seek Him who is coming again.” The point? In my inner turmoil and my unanswered questions today the answer is a Person. That’s true for you as well.

Let’s seek Him, together.
