Read. Just Read.
Thirteenth Sunday after Pentecost: Gospel, John 6:51-69
John 6:51-69
We continue where we left off last week. Wrapping our western, scientific heads around the discourse of Jesus in John 6 takes a bit of effort. Add to that, that in the American church landscape, many have actually been “taught out” of reading this passage as Jesus intended it, the passage ends up being the seat of much confusion. Jesus didn’t intend that. In fact, as we see Jesus “double-down” on the spectacular truth of Jesus as manna, Jesus as Passover Lamb, and perhaps Jesus as our daily bread, His meaning should be clear. If we allow the Word to speak, if we allow the Word to do its work, there really is no question as to what Jesus is getting at.
So take some time to read our gospel for the week. Then go back and read John 6 in full. Perhaps several times. Listen to Jesus. And leave with “bellies full.”
“For my flesh is true food, and my blood is true drink” (John 6:55).
