Read It All
Circumcision and Name of Jesus: Old Testament, Numbers 6:22-27
Numbers 6:22-27
Finding ourselves still in the days of Christmas, we are aware of the blessing of receiving. Gifts have been wrapped and opened to “oohs,” “ahs,” and “thank yous.” Presumably there has been much discussion and remembering again that all our gift-giving is founded in THE GIFT of the Heavenly Father for all His children. Oh, that all His children would embrace that gift, that sublime gift of His Son. But that’s for another time.
Now, in the middle of Christmas joy we find a reading that speaks of blessing. It comes curiously, at least I think it’s curious, after the Old Testament instruction on the setting apart of someone taking the Nazirite vow. Details, special behaviors and restrictions. Nothing easy about it. It’s a vow of separation. A vow to be different. For God. And that’s all well and good.
But what comes immediately on the heels of those instructions is a blessing. Almost a “Law and Gospel” combination. The Law is declared through the vows and then … then:
“This is the way you shall bless the children of Israel. Say to them …” And then comes the beautiful “Aaronic Blessing” that we all love. Read it again. Sweet gospel from God’s own speaking. Gifts and promises, through Word and Name. Read all the way to the end. Nothing could be sweeter. He blesses us, calls us His own and blesses us some more.
Merry Christmas!
