Questioning

Ezekiel 18:1-4, 25-32

It is a common thing in the Scriptures to find God’s people questioning the wisdom, plans and actions of the Lord. In our text above the issue is coming to the central point of whether or not the God of Israel is just. While that sounds horrible-to ask such questions-I have to cop to the fact that I have been right there. I’m struggling with an issue as I write this that has driven my heart to ask this and similar questions. So, while this is a necessary consideration at the twenty- thousand foot level, for me, it’s right between my eyes.

Here the discussion relates to how God deals with the one who chooses sin or righteousness. “Yet the house of Israel says, ‘The way of the Lord is not just’” (18:29a). The Lord gives a quick answer and of course it is the correct one. But the twist is in the accusation leveled against their God. And wrong thoughts about God are just as much idolatry as the crafting of golden idols. Now, it's not wrong to question the Lord. And He knows we will. But it is wrong to question Him with preconceived notions filled with contempt. That is what the prophet is dealing with here.

God’s standard is perfection. Not only do I not have the power in myself to meet that standard, but I too easily question the Lord when He calls me to account for my failure. Perhaps that is the greater sin. After all, the Lord calls me to clear vision of my sin so that I will fall before Him, admit my crimes and call out for mercy. Everything our Lord does, even His answers to our questions, are meant to move us exactly there.
