Obey Because...
Proper 6: Old Testament, Exodus 19:2-8
Exodus 19:2-8
Obedience to God’s Word and will is important. But it is imperative to know the “why” behind the do (or don’t do). God is explaining to Moses that God has given him instruction for the people. But before those instructions are made explicit there is a review. God reminds Moses to remind the people what God has done in delivering them from the bondage of Egypt and the ire of its king. In our parlance, “God saved them.” And now their identity is tied to that deliverance. Israel’s behavior didn’t bring about the rescue. But it certainly points back to it.
In the New Testament, the “Passover” deliverance has come to fulfillment and our role is much the same as our ancient ancestors. Obey the voice of the Lord because He has saved you. Saved you by Himself and to Himself. We belong to Him and our behavior, both hands and heart, should point to that truth.
