Not Your Average Hallmark Greeting

Matthew 10:34-42

I’m telling you this morning that the words spoken by the Lord Jesus in the gospel reading for this week are simply stunning. Think of how often you have been in the mall or a store looking for that “just right” Christmas card. You cannot decide. Nothing  seems unique so you choose one with the standard, “Peace on Earth.” Yes, I know that is a part of the angels' greeting to the shepherds on that first Christmas Eve. But one would be hard pressed to find that sentiment in the ministry of Jesus as it relates to the world of sinners. No, sin needs to be dealt with before the next step of applying the salve of good news. It’s what Luther and his followers came to be known for: the proper distinction of Law and Gospel.

Here in the gospel reading is law. Judgment. “For I did not come to bring peace but a sword, “ says our Lord. Really? Is that Jesus’ message for the lost? Yes. It is the front door of the message, but a critical piece of the message nonetheless. Jesus comes to strike a blow, a fatal blow to sin and all its accouterments. The sword, division, the making of enemies within a household. These are indeed the works of the Savior. Funny. We don’t read those amid the holly berries and reindeer, nor do we even find that written in the more religious of greeting cards.

Jesus’ words are difficult words. Perhaps among the most challenging to his hearers that he ever spoke. Jesus had work to do. Hard work. But work the likes of which was worth it to the Son of God. And the work is not easily wrapped and received. Without the presence of the Lord whose work it is we would see no good news, no “Hallmark” greeting in it whatsoever. But He is with us. Always. God be praised!
