No Place for Confusion
Christmas Day: Epistle, Hebrews 1:1-6
Hebrews 1:1-6
Hebrews is a letter penned to bring clarity. Its intended target (primarily) are the people of Abraham. The blood-lined people of Abraham, that is. The early Christian proclamation of Jesus of Nazareth being God in the flesh is a matter of historical record despite modern critics claiming that the deity of Jesus was an idea made up and added by His “duped” followers generations after His death. Those same critics also deny the Lord’s bodily resurrection as well. They’ll have to take that up with Him when they meet Him someday face to face. I pray they are converted first. I digress.
Back to Hebrews. As dear old Dr. Mitchell used to say at the seminary, “The key is always at the door,” and Hebrews is no exception. In the reading for this week, our epistle spells out in no uncertain terms, for those Jews of history and for us, the identity of the Savior. Jesus is God’s Son. Jesus is the appointed heir (legal) of all things and He is the crafter of the ages. And I love this: “who being the brightness of His (the Father’s) glory and the express image of His person” (1:3). Read it and weep … for joy. God has come to us as a God we can see, touch, know and embrace. And all of that will come to pass for us soon. I’m sure of it. And I’m sure of it because God, in His mercy, has let me know all this wondrous truth about Him. One day we’ll be introduced in the flesh.
That is how He was first proclaimed to the shepherds. It is how He lived and died for us. It is how He, alongside us, will share our eternal home. Jesus is God come in flesh. For us all.
Merry Christmas!
