More Honor

Hebrews 3:1-6

I love the letter to the Hebrews. I remember one warm fall afternoon on the campus of the seminary I attended in Portland, Oregon, sitting on the lawn and reading the entire letter. It was the first time I had read it top to bottom in one sitting. Treasured time. Hebrews captures my heart afresh every time I read it because it is all about the One who is above everyone and everything: Jesus.

The writer of the letter wants to express to the Hebrew people that Jesus is their long-awaited Messiah. And to do that the writer must make his case showing Jesus to be superior to angels, to the Law and yes even to Moses. “For Jesus has been counted worthy of more glory than Moses–as much more glory as the builder of a house has more honor than the house itself” (3:3). Jesus is likened to the builder of a house and Moses to the house itself. The builder is greater than that which is built. Simple argument. But what a stir it caused then. And now, were one to raise the issue with a practicing Jew.

Jesus is greater. Jesus is infinitely greater. Because Jesus is the Creator of Moses, of us all, of “all things visible and invisible,” as the great creed says. Yes, the letter to the Hebrews is a great read and so worth Your time. Jesus would be honored to meet you there.
