Miracles

Tenth Sunday after Pentecost: Gospel, Mark 6:45-56

Mark 6:45-56

In our gospel reading this week we encounter Jesus the water-walker and Jesus the healer. Mark is filled with the powerful works of the Savior and the works come thick and fast. Here in the space of just twelve verses Jesus puts on display that He is Lord of Creation and the Source and Sustainer of humanity.

I do think it is a wise practice to read gospel accounts from time to time inserting ourselves into the stories. Not to make the stories about us, but to let the stories occur around us. It is easy to forget that Jesus had dirty feet, got his robe wet walking the shores of Galilee, and spent much of His time entertaining the sideways looks and jeers of skeptics. But He did. Inserting ourselves into the gospel accounts helps us to check our attitudes and approaches to the God-sized works of the Messiah. His miracles are as much for us as they were for those standing near.

Thank God He hasn’t left us out.
