Mine Eyes Have Seen the Glory
The Transfiguration of Our Lord: Gospel, Luke 9:28-36
Luke 9:28-36
Challenging it is to write comments and meditations on texts where God shows His glory in its, well … in its GLORY. See there? I cannot even write the first sentence in any normal sense. We have run into dear old Moses a couple of times this week. And here in this week’s gospel once again we run into the grand man of the Old Testament.
Where do we find him today? Why, with His Savior. It is a moment of revelation to three of Jesus’ “present day” companions. And they have the startling opportunity to see their Savior flanked by two saints they have only heard and read about, namely Moses and Elijah. I am always intrigued that they recognized them, having of course, never met them in the flesh. How could they? So we have the great representative of the Law and the master of the Prophets with the very Word Himself. And He revealed in all His glory.
He is speaking to them “of His departure which He was to accomplish at Jerusalem” (9:31). So very interesting and important that the word translated as “departure” in our Bibles is the Greek word from which we get the word “exodus.” Yes, Jesus is about to commandeer the people of God in a “freedom walk” that will gain what both Moses and Elijah are experiencing before Jesus’ inner circle: entrance into the Promised Land with the Savior.
Revelation of Glory that marks reality. For Moses and Elijah. For the disciples. And for you and me. Take another look.
