Reformation Sunday: First Reading: Revelation 14:6-7

Revelation 14:6-7

Each year Reformation Sunday rolls around. Of course, it is a date in our country that is shared with Halloween. For better or worse, at least from the world’s perspective the celebration of the Protestant Reformation comes in second. Not in my heart. And I’m guessing probably not in yours either. Each year I try to point my readers to something in the text that I think will benefit them spiritually. This year is no exception.

Angels, gospel proclamation, and God’s impending judgment for unrepentant sinners all show up in this brief reading. And something else as well. There is a call to worship and the angel leaves no mistake regarding Who it is that we must worship, namely, “him who made heaven and earth.” So you see, the good news granted us in this text has a Source. And the source is the very God who made all things, visible and invisible. The gospel comes from Him. From the Eternal God. It’s been a long time coming.
