Having Our Back
Second Sunday in Easter, Epistle, 1 John 1:1-2:2
1 John 1:1-2:2
John’s first epistle is a portion of Holy Scripture that has probably given me as much reading pleasure as any in the Bible. I had a seminary professor who loved it, spoke of and quoted it to us often, and passed on the love in doing so. The first chapter capped by the first two verses of chapter two are an amazing statement of God’s nature, our participation in it, and the way of entrance.
I defer to dear Dr. Martin Luther in his comments on chapter two, verse one. In his comments he points to the role our Savior has in being the spokesman, the defense lawyer if you will, of His people. In today’s parlance you might say it speaks of the One who “has our back.” Listen to this master of the text:
“This text should be written with golden letters and should be painted in the heart. Therefore you should get understanding and say: ‘Christ, I know Thee alone as the Advocate, the Comforter, and the Mediator; and I do not doubt that Thou art such a Person for me but cling firmly to this with my heart and believe’” (AE 30:236).
There is no better defense. And not much else that could be said.
Christ is Risen! He is risen, indeed. Alleluia!
