God Turns the Leaf

Fourteenth Sunday after Pentecost: Epistle, 1 Timothy 1:12-17

1 Timothy 1:12-17

“I’m turning over a new leaf.” “I am giving myself a fresh start.” “I’m starting my diet today … again.” These are all examples of life lived with a “second chance” mentality. But notice, if you will, that the person speaking in these examples is the “leaf turner.” Now, there is nothing wrong with human determination when it truly points us to better attitudes and practices. The difficulty comes when we actually believe that we can overcome our demons or the real ones out there poised to bring us ruin.

St. Paul in his first letter to Pastor Timothy wants to clarify for his disciple that crafting life is all about recognizing our inability to do anything of real worth. God is at the root, the ground of any life built for the pleasure of the Father. And what is truly stunning is that Paul uses the example of his own sinfulness as evidence that it takes the hand of God to first correct the failure, and then to produce fruitful life and service. Just take a moment to read Paul’s account of where he came from, namely “unbelief” (v. 13). And his unbelief issued forth in blasphemy and persecution of God’s Christians leads Paul to his admission of being “chief” of the class of sinners. (cf. v. 15).

God loves to show mercy. But know that unless one is willing to admit their sinfulness, mercy cannot make an entrance, and God’s glory is muffled. Let’s learn with dear Paul what it means to see the wonder of God’s mercy as He turns over our leaves, making saints from sinners. It is His work. He relishes the opportunity.
