God Shall Bless Us

Sixth Sunday of Easter: Psalm, Psalm 67

Psalm 67

Psalm 67 comes our way in the responsive readings for the week. And there are a couple ways that I see this connecting us to the ongoing joy or our Lord’s resurrection. First, the overall tenor of the psalm is one of rejoicing and that for all nations. And second, in perhaps a backhanded way as I see this connecting to the promise given to Abram: “And in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed” (Genesis 12:3b).

Certainly, the blessing of God for all humankind comes most pointedly and powerfully from the triumph of the Son over sin, death and the devil. And that triumph is the resurrection of Jesus. God’s blessing has always been for His people and the blessing comes to us in our lives daily through the reading, pondering and hearing of the Word of God. And the news that shakes the world and in the shaking, blesses the world is that death is defeated in the indestructible life of the Savior.

“Let the peoples praise You, O God;

let all the peoples praise You.

Then the earth shall yield her increase;

God, our own God shall bless us.

God shall bless us,

and all the ends of the earth shall fear Him” (Psalm 67:5-7).

Christ is Risen! He is Risen, indeed. Alleluia!
