Getting the Point
Second Sunday after the Epiphany: Gospel, John 1:29-42a
John 1:29-42a
Just a short commentary today. Enter into the text as if you are seeking something … someone. You need help and you want that help to come from someone who is worthy of your ear. Well in this week’s gospel reading you (and I) have just that. It’s our friend John the Baptist, cousin of Jesus, and the one who Jesus describes as being greater than any man born of women.
John’s ministry is to point. He will do his work best when he points away from himself to the Messiah of Israel. And oh how masterfully he does his work. And he is still doing it:
“Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world” (John 1:29)!
No need to look elsewhere.
