Flocks and Fixtures
Proper 11: Epistle, Ephesians 2:11-22
Ephesians 2:11-22
Our first reading for the week dealt with God’s people as a “flock.” Today’s, as a “temple.” Both readings are pointing to the fact that God wants His people together. And I love how our Lord is willing to use a multiplicity of figures to help us see that truth. As we find Paul discussing the common home of both Jew and Gentile in Christ, he highlights that there is no division which can separate the two camps any longer. God’s common purpose is that through the proclamation of His truth, all would be brought together and will constitute the place of His dwelling. It’s a beautiful truth: “And he came and preached peace to those who were far off and peace to those who were near” (Eph. 2:17).
It is through God’s Son that access to the Father is won and sustained. It is through God’s Son that a building is constructed that can quiet previous differences and yes, hatred. And it is only through God’s Son that the structure that is the home of our life and worship is known as “holy.”
Whether flock in the field or the place of His dwelling, the Lord calls for and makes provision for the complete unity of His people. That unity is already a reality. The Shepherd voice has sounded. The foundation has been laid.
We pray: Father and Lord of the Church, may we, Your children revel in the unity and security of belonging to You. We need not look for anything more. Amen!
