Brief Thoughts on a Great Good

Lent 4: Epistle, Ephesians 2:1-10

Ephesians 2:1-10

This coming Sunday’s epistle lesson includes verses among the most quoted by Christians, and always lovingly by Lutherans, in particular. “For by grace you have been saved, through faith …” and on from Ephesians two, verse eight through the next couple of verses. I’ll let you read and savor them.

In this passage we have our state outside of Christ on display and then our Savior and His work burst on the scene. Everything in our rescue comes from Him. Everything. We have been saved, raised and seated with Him. To what end? Well this is what I want to point to today: “ .... so that in the coming ages he might show the immeasurable riches of his grace in kindness toward us in Christ Jesus” (2:7). Before we get to the treasures of verse eight and beyond, we have verse seven speaking to us of the Father’s delight in putting the work of His Son on display. For all the coming ages. The work of Jesus for us is that grand. The scope of it is infinite in effect. And the Father will unveil for all eternity, “the immeasurable riches of his grace” given to us in the kindness of Jesus.

Those are thrilling words to share, to read, to ponder and to hold. Read them again: “the immeasurable riches of his grace,” “the immeasurable riches of his grace.” The joy and delight of Ephesians 2:8-10 has its grounding in the infinite gift of God’s Son. Too big. Too good.

No more words.
