All For Naught?

Ecclesiastes 1: 1-2, 12-14; 2:18-26

Solomon’s wisdom is legend. Perhaps better to say that Solomon’s wisdom is legendary because that wisdom was real. It was a gift from his God. And it was vast. Even a simple reading of those portions of Scripture attributed to his pen offer the trite and surface world of our day a lot to think about. Sad, isn’t it, that so few in our day actually consider the weightier issues of life? If you never think deeply about big things, well then, I guess you never have to take responsibility for getting life wrong. I digress.

Ecclesiastes is thought to be Solomon’s life commentary on life sans the Deity. No God in life opens doors (actually chains the right doors) to a variety of perspectives. But they’re all headed to lifeless, joyless outcomes. Such is the dilemma outlined in our reading this week. Work, work, work. And what is it all for? Nothing. Eventually all my gain ends up in the hands of someone who toiled for it not. What a drag! The issues really reach so much deeper and broader than that.

Open up and read the writing of “the Preacher” and he will guide You to run toward the God who makes life worthwhile. Only He does.
