Proper 15: Old Testament, Isaiah 56:1, 6-8

Isaiah 56:1, 6-8

This Sunday’s reading from the Old Testament takes us back to the prophet Isaiah. And it is straightforward and clear. The message comes on the heels of the previous chapter’s Divine Invite to come and take the food and drink of God that gives life eternal. And it is to be had at a dandy price: FREE!

Chapter 56 adds this to the good news: that in case there are worries as to possible limits to the scope of that invitation, then breathe easy. Chapter 55 and the beginning of 56 scream the joyous news that God has a plan in place to save His people and anyone can be His people. His salvation will come and His deliverance will be revealed, says Isaiah at the outset and then verses 6-7: “And the foreigners who join themselves to the LORD, and to be His servants, everyone who keeps the Sabbath and does not profane it--and holds fast my covenant--these I will bring to My holy mountain , and make them joyful in My house of prayer …” . Finally verse 8 closes The Lord GOD, who gathers the outcasts of Israel, declares, “I will gather yet others to him, besides those already gathered.”

God is for His people. Anyone CAN be His people. By His mercy and grace in Christ Jesus we are His people. Enough said.
